As hunters, much of the value that we place on the successful harvest of a game animal stems from our ability to provide our families with ample sustenance. As such, there are few things as enjoyable as sitting down at the dinner table to enjoy the bounty of our recent successes afield.
In a bid to further enjoy our stock of fresh game meat, we often seek out new recipes to diversify that which we and our family consume. As deer season approaches, many hunters begin thumbing through cookbooks in search of the perfect dish to put a fresh smile on the faces of all who belly up to the table.
One such culinary creation that is sure to do the trick is Venison Salisbury Steak. This dish can be cooked in under 30 minutes, and can be scaled to feed the neighborhood, if such a need should arise.
Gather Your Supplies
Before actual cooking can begin, you will need to gather all supplies that will be needed. Outside of basic kitchen utensils, much of what must be prepared will center around procuring all of your ingredients.
* 1 lb Ground venison
* Extra virgin olive oil
* ⅓ cup Bread crumbs
* 2 tsp of Ketchup
* 1 tsp of Mustard
* 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce
* ½ tsp Garlic powder
* ½ tsp Onion powder
* ½ tsp Salt
* ½ tsp Pepper
* 2 packets of Brown gravy mix
* 2 cups of Hot Water
* 1 tsp of Ketchup
* ½ tsp of Worcestershire Sauce
Preparing The Steak Patties
You will begin by preparing your steak patties. In an appropriately sized mixing bowl, break up your ground venison and sprinkle bread crumbs over the meat. Completely hand mix these bread crumbs into the meat.
Next, add your wet ingredients to the meat mixture, thoroughly stirring in the ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire Sauce. Finally, mix in the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Once all ingredients are thoroughly mixed, it is time to begin heating your skillet. Heat a small amount of olive oil in a large skillet on the stove, using medium heat. These steaks can also be cooked using an electric skillet.
After heating the oil, begin patting out your steak patties. Flatten the patties out so that they will cook evenly, and add them to the heated pan. Continue cooking the patties, flipping them once, until no pink remains in the meat. Once the meat is cooked, lower the temperature under the skillet to low.
Preparing the Gravy Mixture
While your patties are cooking you can begin preparing your gravy mixture. Begin by heating two cups of water until hot. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the two packets of brown gravy mix with the hot water until well blended. Now you will add the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce to your gravy mixture.
With your steak patties cooked thoroughly, coat them as desired with your gravy mixture. Allow the gravy to simmer in the pan over low heat until the gravy thickens.
Topping It Off
You can ramp up the flavor of these delicious Salisbury Steaks by sautéing onions and mushrooms together. Before adding the gravy mixture to your steaks in the pan, top each steak with a serving of onions and mushrooms, then pour the gravy mix over top, and simmer until the gravy thickens.
